Let your baby walk barefoot

You do not need to invest in a lot of different shoes for your child: The best shoes for beginning walkers are no shoes at all. Indoors and on safe surfaces outdoors (like grass or sand), let your baby walk barefoot (or, if you’d like, in non-slip socks if you are indoors) as much as possible to help build muscle tone in your baby’s feet and ankles, to help your baby’s arches develop, and to learn balance and coordination. For outdoor excursions, keep the shoes lightweight and flexible. Stay away from tall booties or groovy high-top sneakers, because too much ankle support can actually slow down your walker by constricting her movement.
